The pilot targets small and mid-sized machine shops that run unattended shifts on a limited number of machines but cannot justify the capital cost of a dedicated robotic cell for a single line. Vertex says the cells use AI-based part recognition so a single cell can handle several part families without a full re-tooling between jobs.
“Most of the shops in this cluster run five to fifteen machines. A robotic cell makes sense on paper, but not on one shop's balance sheet alone. Sharing it does,” said a Vertex Robotics program lead involved in the rollout.
What's next
Vertex expects to onboard the first eight member shops by the end of the year, with usage-based pricing rather than a fixed lease, and plans to evaluate similar shared-infrastructure pilots in other tool room clusters in 2027.

Of all the automation options on the table, robotic loading and unloading keeps winning the budget line. The reasons have more to do with labour economics than robotics hype.
